Man pleads to lesser charges in death of 10-week old son

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

The man charged with murder in the death of his 10-week-old son in March has pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Julio Carrillo, 20, pleaded guilty in Allen Superior Court on Friday to charges of felony neglect and battery. The murder charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement.

The agreement calls for him to spend 30 years in prison, and a sentencing hearing is scheduled Jan. 17.

Lxzander Carrillo was fussy when his father changed him on March 12, according to court documents. Julio Carrillo then picked the boy up and turned to walk out of the room when he tripped on a swing and the two fell to the floor, he told investigators.

Doctors said the baby showed multiple brain bleeds, a skull fracture and other injuries consistent with abuse. Carrillo said he was the only person home with the boy at the time, and the baby's mother was at school.
