Homestead was playing its fourth game in 42 hours, but the Spartans still got off to a hot start in the first quarter and sailed to a 75-45 win over Carroll on Saturday morning in the SAC Holiday Tournament semifinal.
The Spartans (15-2), who lost 49-29 to Northwestern in the Hall of Fame Classic final at New Castle on Friday Night, hit their first 10 shots of the morning to build a 26-4 lead in the first quarter. Kara Gealy shot 4 for 4 and scored 11 points during that run, although she did not attempt another shot for the rest of the game.
Freshman Ayanna Patterson was one of the few Homestead starters who continued to put points on the board into the second half, finishing with 21 points. She also had 11 rebounds and drew numerous fouls from Carroll under the basket. Sydney Graber and Amber Austin each scored 10 points. Ten of the 12 Homestead players scored.
The Chargers trailed 39-14 at halftime and got into more of a rhythm after halftime, but it was too late to close the gap. Malia Williams led Carroll (9-6) with 14 points, and Olivia Hoeppner scored 12 and had three steals. Emily Parrett scored 11 and had five rebounds.
The Spartans will move onto their second tournament final in two days, facing the winner of the Concordia-South Side semifinal at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Wayne.
