April Tinsley murderer moved to Indiana prison

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

The Grabill man who killed April Tinsley in 1988 was moved Wednesday to a prison in New Castle.

John D. Miller, 59, had been housed at the Indiana Department of Correction Reception Diagnostic Center in Plainfield, where he was sent after being sentenced in December to 80 years in prison for sexually assaulting and killing the 8-year-old girl. He is now being held at the New Castle Correctional Facility, a medium security prison that houses nearly 3,100 inmates.

The move is routine.

Miller abducted April from Fort Wayne on April 1, 1988, and strangled her. He dumped her body in a ditch in DeKalb County, and the crime went unsolved for decades.

He pleaded guilty Dec. 7 in Allen Superior Court.
