Trial starts in road rage fatal

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

Jury selection is underway in the trial of a Fort Wayne man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 60-year-old man following a road rage incident last year.

Brandon M. Cook, 28, beat Orlando Fernandez during an argument Aug. 8, police say, and Fernandez later died. Both men were driving through construction on U.S. 30 when they stopped and argued, according to a probable cause affidavit.

A witness told investigators Cook punched Hernandez 4-5 times in the face, leaving him bloodied by the side of the road.

Cook fled Fort Wayne and was arrested about a week later in Florida.

He is charged with involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor battery. The manslaughter charge carries a penalty of up to six years in prison.

The trial is scheduled for three days, and witness testimony could begin today.
