Multiple crews respond to Defiance house fire

PAUL WYCHE | The Journal Gazette

Four firefighters were hurt battling a blaze Friday evening at a northwest Ohio single-story home.

Highland Township Fire Department Capt. Brian Berry said crews were called about 8:30 p.m. to a house on Dohoney Road in Defiance County.

The owner of the home made it out safely before emergency responders arrived.

Smoke was coming from the back of the house near an electric meter. Berry said the fire was spreading in the attic area of the home.

"It kept moving on us," he said. "When insulation burns, you just have to wait it out."

Because of Friday's high temperatures, 53 firefighters from multiple departments were called to help work the blaze, which was under control around midnight.

The injured firefighters weren't taken to a hospital, but were treated for heat exhaustion and falling through the floor.

"We didn't clear the scene until about 2 a.m.," Berry said.

The fire remains under investigation.
