Judge finds suspect in mother's death incompetent to stand trial

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A Fort Wayne man who allegedly told police he was possessed by demons and Adolf Hitler when he killed his mother last year is not competent to stand trial, a judge has ruled.

Jason A. Steiss, 35, is charged with murder in the Oct. 24 killing of Joy Steiss, 64, in her home on Stanford Avenue. He bit, punched and choked her, according to court documents.

"Court finds defendant is currently incompetent to stand trial as he lacks the ability to assist counsel in his defense," an order signed last week by Allen Superior Court Judge David Zent states.

Steiss was ordered into the custody of the Indiana Family and Social Service Administration Mental Health Division.

His lawyer argued in court documents Steiss had battled mental health problems for years before the alleged attack and "has been under a guardianship for mental health reasons."

The judge's order comes after doctors were appointed to examine him.
