Commissioners to settle hiring lawsuit

Dave Gong | The Journal Gazette

The Allen County commissioners on Friday voted unanimously to settle a lawsuit filed by a former Allen County corrections officer who alleged racial discrimination in hiring practices.

Terry Lymon, an African-American man, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne during May 2018.

Lymon, the complaint states, has worked as a correctional officer for the Allen County sheriff's department and was at one time a trooper for the Indiana State Police.

He holds a master's degree, the complaint states, and claims he was "discriminated against on the basis of his race and color, and retaliated against for filing previous charges of discrimination against the defendant," which is listed in court documents as Allen County government, et al.

The commissioners on Friday approved a $20,000 settlement with Lymon, who has agreed to never again apply for employment with the Allen County government.

The settlement was recommended by the county's human resources department, Bill Fishering, the commissioners' attorney, said Friday.
