Ossian man sentenced in child-beating death

The Journal Gazette

An Ossian man charged with beating an 18-month old child to death was sentenced to 35 years today.

Brent Scheiber pleaded guilty to aggravated battery resulting in the death of Kamryn Price, who medics found unresponsive and not breathing on Jan. 7, 2019.

Scheiber was the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother and had originally told medics that the infant had fallen out of the crib, but later pleaded guilty, the Wells County prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The judge in the case chose to go higher than the advisory sentence of 30 years, the statement said, because even though Scheiber lacked criminal history, the age of the child and the fact that Scheiber was in a position of trust as a caregiver were aggravating factors.

It said the judge also said that Scheiber has never disclosed what he did to cause the child's injuries, and the court took that into consideration during sentencing.
