ACC/Big Ten matchups, dates announced

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

Indiana will play Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge for the third time in four years Nov. 27, the two conferences announced Friday.

The Hoosiers will travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium for the first time since 2015 and will take on a Duke team that is No. 2 in's early rankings.

The rest of the schedule for the annual inter-conference series was also announced, including a Purdue-Florida State matchup featuring two teams that made the Sweet 16 last season, and a Notre Dame-Illinois contest.

Indiana's meeting with Duke will be the fifth meeting between the two teams in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Duke has won the first four, including a 91-81 victory at Assembly Hall last season when the Blue Devils were No. 1. Duke is 17-2 in the event overall, while Indiana is 7-10.

The game will be a matchup of high school teammates, as well. Indiana freshman Jake Forrester and Duke freshman Cam Reddish both played at Westtown High School in Westtown, Pennsylvania. Reddish was the No. 2 recruit in the class, per, while Forrester was No. 141.

The game between Notre Dame and Illinois at Purcell Pavilion in South Bend will also take place Nov. 27, one of six games that day. It will be the first time the Illini have played on the road against Notre Dame since 1955. These teams met in Champaign, Illinois for the 2015 Challenge, where the Irish won 84-79.

Before that, the previous meeting between Notre Dame and the Illini came in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, when the Irish ended Illinois' season with a 68-60 second-round win.

Purdue and Florida State will face off Nov. 28 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in Tallahassee, Florida. Purdue lost in the Sweet 16 a year ago, while the Seminoles advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to Michigan. In the early ESPN Top 25 poll, the Boilermakers are No. 25, while Florida State checks in at No. 18. The matchup will be the only one in the Challenge between 2018 Sweet 16 teams and one of three between NCAA Tournament teams.

The teams have met twice before, with the Seminoles winning both games, including a 97-57 decision in Tallahassee during the 2005 Challenge. That 40-point loss was the fourth game of Matt Painter's tenure as Boilermakers coach. Though Purdue lost, it is still the winningest Big Ten team in Challenge play, with a 10-7 record. The Boilers beat then-No. 17 Louisville 66-57 at Mackey Arena in the event last season.

Purdue is one of the few Big Ten teams to possess an overall record of success in the Challenge since it was first held in 1999. The ACC has won the event 12 of 19 times including the last two. The 2017 event wasn't much of a challenge, as the Big Ten won just three of the 14 games.

All 14 matchups in the 2018 Challenge will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU and tip times will be announced later.
