The Padres shook up the TinCaps' bullpen today ahead of Fort Wayne's series finale against the Burlington Bees. San Diego sent reliever Matt Brash from the TinCaps to the Arizona League, while AZL Padres reliever Edwuin Bencomo will return to Fort Wayne in a swap of a right-hander for right-hander.
The move is purely a numbers game right now as Brash has been excellent in limited time in Fort Wayne. The 6-foot-1, 21-year-old was the first 2019 draft pick to reach the TinCaps and has worked 4 1/3 innings over four outings in Fort Wayne. In those four appearances, Brash has given up just one run on three hits while striking out six and walking none. He'll likely be back this year and certainly in 2020. He's an advanced arm and at 21 he won't be in the low minors for long.
Bencomo, meanwhile, struggled in one appearance with the TinCaps, giving up five runs with three walks in 2 1/3 innings, though only one of those runs was earned. The game was a blowout loss and his appearances was essentially mop-up duty. The 6-2 20-year-old has been highly effective in rookie ball, whiffing 13 without a walk in eight innings over four appearances. Some bad batted-ball luck has inflated his ERA to 5.63, but he'll get a chance to prove himself in the Fort Wayne bullpen for the near-future.
The TinCaps finish their series in Burlington tonight with first pitch at 7:30 p.m.
