The final homestand of the 2019 season started off rough for the TinCaps Wednesday. Fort Wayne fell behind to the Cubs early, facing an 8-0 deficit after only two innings. A Justin Lopez 3-run homer cut Fort Wayne’s deficit to 9-4 in the sixth, but they would edge no closer.
Still, Thursday's game brings plenty of storylines to Parkview Field. TinCaps left-handed pitcher Jesus Gonzalez makes his debut for Fort Wayne. He was transferred to Fort Wayne from the Short-Season Tri-City Dust Devils on Wednesday.
Gonzalez, a native of Venezuela, turned 18 on June 12. He’s the first Fort Wayne player born in the year 2001. Gonzalez is now the youngest player in the Midwest League this season.
Gonzalez will be facing Cubs' right-handed pitcher Riley Thompson. Thompson got ejected the last time he pitched against the TinCaps for putting an illegal substance on the ball.
The meeting means a little more to South Bend than Fort Wayne, as the Cubs can clinch a playoff spot with a win and a Lansing loss.
Mad Ants coach Steve Gansey is set to throw out the first pitch.
