Shawn Szydlowski kept up his torrid pace with a goal and two assists, while Garrett Thompson had two goals as the Komets beat the Wheeling Nailers 3-2 in front of 1,498 fans at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia on Sunday.
Despite playing without several key players – Jamie Schaafsma (illness), Gabriel Desjardins (groin), Dennis Kravchenko (back), Justin Hodgman (shoulder) and Marco Roy and Artur Tyanulin (both called up) – the Komets won for the fifth time in six games.
Goaltender Michael Houser stopped 40 shots for the Komets (10-6-2), who thwarted a 6-on-4 Wheeling advantage on a power play in the waning minutes.
The Nailers (12-7-2) got 31 saves from Adam Morrison.
Scoring for Wheeling were Cody Wydo, who made it 1-0 at 12:13 of the first period, and former Komets defenseman Dan Milan, who tied it at 2 at 5:08 of the second period.
Thompson netted the game-winner at 13:14 of the second period, with assists going to Szydlowski and Ryan Lowney.
Szydlowski has a goal in three straight games and in five of his last six, a stretch in which he’s totaled 11 points.
In the first meeting of the season between the teams, Fort Wayne was 0 for 3 on power plays and Wheeling was 0 for 2.
