K's lose in Indy; division goes to Toledo
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
The Komets’ hopes of winning the Central Division title are now dissolved as it will go to the Toledo Walleye for a fourth straight year.
The Komets fell behind by five goals quickly – Josh Shalla yet again scorched the Komets with two goals – and lost 5-1 to the Indy Fuel on Saturday night in front of 4,239 fans at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.
The Komets (44-19-6) are 2-3-3 over their last eight games. Indy (34-29-5) has won four of its last five games.
Fort Wayne goaltender Cam Lanigan stopped 7 of 10 shots before he was replaced 14:30 into the first period, having allowed a goal to Matt Rupert and two to Shalla, who now has a whopping 19 goals and 26 points in 15 games over the last two seasons against Fort Wayne playing for Indy and Wheeling.
Indy’s first two goals were on power plays as it finished 2 of 5. Fort Wayne, which played with eight defensemen in the lineup, was 0 for 5.
Lanigan’s replacement, Garrett Bartus, stopped 18 of 20 shots, allowing goals to Darian Dziurzynski and Mathew Thompson.
The Komets’ first goal came 5:42 into the third period from Daniel Maggio. Etienne Marcoux stopped 33 of 34 shots for the Fuel.
Note: Louick Marcotte, who was waived by the Komets on Friday, was claimed by Wheeling.
