Fears have been allayed – for now – that the Newfoundland Growlers, who won the ECHL’s Kelly Cup last season, would be without a home after this season.
The Telegram in St. John’s, Newfoundland, reported that the Growlers and the Mile One Centre are close to a deal on a new lease.
Press conferences by the Growlers and the St. John’s Mayor, which had been scheduled for Tuesday, were both canceled after weeks of posturing by all sides. The Growlers won the Cup in their inaugural season.
According to the Telegram, the latest lease offer from the city includes: game-night rental fee of $2,000 per contest, a 70/30 split in the city’s favor on food and beverage revenue, and $500,000 payment to the city for corporate revenue.
In my opinion, those numbers are awfully high for a Double-A team to have to pay, even in Canadian money.
