Cole Kehler, who was in the Komets’ net for each of the first three games of the season, was called up to Ontario of the American Hockey League today. The Los Angeles Kings’ prospect was 2-1-0 with a 3.37 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.
However, another goalie was sent to Fort Wayne from Ontario -- Matthew Villalta. Stephen Baylis, a forward, accompanied him.
Villalta, 20, was a third-round draft pick of the Kings in 2017. A rookie, he’d played only one period in relief, stopping 8 of 11 shots for the Reign in an 8-2 loss to Tucson on Oct. 12. Last season, he was 33-12-0 with a 3.03 GAA and a .903 SP for Soo of the Ontario Hockey League.
Baylis, 25, is a rookie out of Bowling Green, for which he had eight goals and 22 points in 37 games as a captain last season. He hasn’t played yet this season as he recuperated from shoulder surgery.
The Komets play 7 p.m. Wednesday against the Kalamazoo Wings in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Unless Dylan Ferguson returns from Chicago of the AHL, Villalta and Stephen Dhillon should be Fort Wayne’s goalies.
