Golden Knights' AHL purchase could affect K's

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

The NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights have purchased the American Hockey League team in San Antonio and, pending league approval, will move it to Henderson/Las Vegas for next season

The Komets are the ECHL affiliate of the Golden Knights, with the Chicago Wolves currently the AHL team in the system.

The St. Louis Blues have been sending their AHL players to San Antonio and next season, presumably, will work with the Wolves as they’ll be the only AHL team without an NHL partner. The Tulsa Oilers are the Blues’ current ECHL affiliate.

The Komets’ affiliation with the Golden Knights expires this summer and the teams have yet to converse about next season. Fort Wayne general manager David Franke admitted, it’s possible Vegas will want an ECHL affiliate closer geographically.

However, sending players from the AHL to the ECHL great distances isn’t uncommon. The Komets have an informal working agreement with the Los Angeles Kings, meaning they share players with the AHL’s Ontario (California) Reign.
