SOUTH BEND – There was a time when the Notre Dame women’s basketball team could not beat Tennessee.
The Irish eventually bridged that gap, however, and Monday’s 88-77 win was their fifth in a row over the eight-time national champions.
Junior guard Jewell Loyd had 34 points and five rebounds for No. 6 Notre Dame (17-2).
No. 5 Tennessee (15-3) received 22 points and eight rebounds from forward Bashaara Graves.
The Irish won with a powerful offense that shot 58 percent from the field. Point guard Lindsay Allen had 15 points, six assists and five rebounds in support of Loyd, while Brianna Turner added 13 points and five blocks.
Notre Dame pulled away courtesy of a 13-5 run that was capped by two free throws from Allen with 10:26 remaining. Those provided a 10-point lead, 69-59.
