Caleb Furst in health and safety protocol, out vs. Nicholls State

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue big man Caleb Furst is in the team's health and safety protocol and will not play against Nicholls State, the Boilermakers announced this afternoon.

Furst, a Fort Wayne native, Blackhawk Christian graduate and the 2021 Indiana Mr. Basketball is averaging 6.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 21.7 minutes per contest. He has been in the starting lineup all season, but will likely be replaced at his power forward slot by redshirt sophomore Mason Gillis tonight. The Boilers could also turn to sophomore Ethan Morton if coach Matt Painter decides he likes having Gillis coming off the bench.

Gillis and Morton could play a significant role in this contest – as Furst would have – because Nicholls is likely to try a small-ball approach that emphasizes its outstanding guards and makes it difficult for Purdue to keep 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, for whom the Colonels have no answer defensively – on the floor.

It's unclear whether Furst will also miss Purdue's next game against No. 24 Wisconsin on Monday. The entire Boilermakers traveling party, including all players, is vaccinated against COVID-19 and has received a booster shot, according to Painter.
