A slip of the tongue Sunday showed New Haven residents are still adjusting to having a new mayor.
Steve Kennedy, volunteer veterans service coordinator for the city, flubbed the introduction of Mayor Steve McMichael during a ceremony dedicating a Clothes for Joes donation box at City Hall.
"Mayor McDonald – I mean McMichael, sorry," Kennedy said.
McMichael began his first term this month. He succeeded Terry McDonald, who led New Haven for 20 years.
The audience in the packed city council chambers had a good laugh, McMichael included.
McMichael checked off a first during the dedication: issuing his first proclamation. He declared Jan. 26, 2020, as Clothes for Joes Day. The organization accepts clothing for military veterans.
"Whereas, the Clothes for Joes donation box gives veterans more than just clothes," McMichael said, reading from the proclamation. "It gives them a sense of hope and stability knowing that their community cares and respects our veterans enough to give back."
