Concordia boys basketball coach Austin Thoms has resigned, he confirmed Sunday.
Thoms was 11-36 in two seasons with the Cadets, leading the team to a 51-44 overtime loss to Angola in Saturday's Class 3A sectional finals at New Haven.
Thoms sent a letter to parents and players informing them of the school administration's decision to "go in a different direction next year."
"This is not what I wanted," he wrote in the letter. "I am mad, sad and confused. However, like I told our players, the basketball program is bigger than any one person. I told them this has nothing to do with their performance or our record.
"Our team fought hard and competed to the very end. I told them they should be proud of the growth they have shown. I truly have enjoyed coaching them and growing together. I am frustrated it is ending so soon."
The sectional run included a 69-65 win over Leo in the opening round and a 63-54 win over Garrett in the semifinals.
Thoms took over in 2016 for Tim Reinking after completing a season as an assistant women's coach at Northern Colorado. A 2006 Concordia graduate, Thoms averaged 10.7 points as a senior and helped the Cadets win 16 games and a sectional championship.
Athletic director Tim Mannigel declined to comment.
