Northrop boys lead SAC track meet


The Northrop boys track and field team sits atop the team standings after the first day of competition Wednesday at the SAC Championships at North Side. The Bruins have a 40.5-26.5 lead over second-place Concordia.

Northrop's 3,200-meter relay team broke the SAC meet record by .35 seconds, running 8 minutes, 1.03 seconds. The old record was from Bishop Dwenger's 2012 team.

Wayne' s Xavier Ellington won the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), Bishop Dwenger's Mike Garrett won pole vault (11-6) and Treyon Freeman of Concordia won shot put (48-10.5).

The Northrop and Bishop Dwenger girls teams are tied at 27 points apiece.

Bruins' Alicia Tiney-Williams won discus (123-2), Concordia won the 3,200 relay (9:40.21) and South Side's Alexis Grider won the long jump (17-8).

The remaining event finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.



BISHOP DWENGER 12, SOUTH SIDE 0: Olivia Tellez pitched a no-hitter, striking out six and tallied a home run, Olivia Dickerson hit a double and a home run and Emily Anglin had two doubles.

CONCORDIA 10, BISHOP LUERS 0: Cadets' Mariah Perez struck out nine and threw a no-hitter while Libby Hetler went 2 for 3, including a three-run homer.


DEKALB 165, CARROLL 178: At Bridgewater, Bailey Clark shot a 4-over 40 and Gabe Schenk and Seth Gramling each shot 41s to lead the Barons. Ben Jackson led the Chargers with a 41.


NORWELL 3, LEO 2: Breann Barger won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles over Emili Runstad, Molly Burton at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4 over Marisa Eberle and Madison Oakes and Sadie Mann at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-3 over Cassidy Boyce and Quinn Stanchin.

CARROLL 3, SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH 2: At Warsaw, Chargers' No. 1 doubles team of Mia Toscos and Lauren VanWyngarden pulled out a tight one over Nicole Pascual and Kayla Graham 1-6, 6-1, 10-7. St. Joe's Maddie Yergler won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 7-6 (1) over Sydney Jackson.


NORWELL 13, ADAMS CENTRAL 12: At Norwell, Caleb Kohler hit a walk-off single to lift the Knights. He finished 4 for 6 with two runs and Garrett Weybright went 1 for 4 with three runs and two RBI.
