Homestead edges Canterbury to win sectional tennis title

Homestead beat Canterbury 3-2 in the championship match to win the Homestead girls tennis sectional Thursday.

The Spartans got wins from Madison Zitlaw at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-1) and both doubles teams, Payton Krahn and Natalie Steingass at No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-3) and Delaney Lewis and Pravi Jain at No. 2 doubles (6-4, 6-1).

Canterbury's two wins came from Samantha Becker at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Katherine Davidson at No. 2 singles (7-5, 7-5). 

 

Girls tennis

CARROLL 5, CHURUBUSCO 0: The No. 4 Chargers moved on to the Carroll Sectional finals by blanking the Eagles. Katelyn VanWyngarden won at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. 

LEO 4, SNIDER 1: The Lions beat the Panthers in the semifinals of the Carroll Sectional. Leo's Alexis Christlieb won at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0. 

BISHOP DWENGER 3, CONCORDIA 2: The Saints picked up a pair of tough wins in doubles to win in the semifinals of the Concordia Sectional. 

At No. 1 doubles, Laura Brust and Savanna Henry won 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 over Jadyn Stevens and Brooklyn Smith, and at No. 2 doubles, Eden Carrison-Kitch and Mercedes Gonzales beat Lauren Schmidt and Caroline Bussick 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). 

NEW HAVEN 3, SOUTH SIDE 2: The Bulldogs swept the singles matches to beat the Archers in the Concordia Sectional semifinals. Erica Miller won at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), Hannah Bethay won at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) and Gabriel Shuler won at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0). 

HUNTINGTON NORTH 5, ADAMS CENTRAL 0: The Vikings moved on to the finals of the Norwell Sectional with the win. Tarah Zumbrun had the toughest time, beating Saige Rinkenberger 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3 singles. 

NORWELL 3, SOUTH ADAMS 2: The host Knights staved off the Starfires to move into the championship of the Norwell Sectional. Abby Hoover and Ashlee Xayyachack led Norwell with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Cassie Yoder and Katrina Fosnaugh. 

WAWASEE 4, COLUMBIA CITY 1: The Warriors beat the Eagles in the sectional semifinals at the Warsaw Sectional. Kendra Doerr led the way for Wawasee with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. 

CENTRAL NOBLE 4, WEST NOBLE 1: Macy Griffis and Madi Walker won at No. 2 doubles 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to lead the Cougars at the West Noble Sectional.  Central Noble advances to Saturday's championship match. 

WESTVIEW 5, EAST NOBLE 0: The Warriors won all five spots in straight sets to advance to Saturday's championship match at the West Noble Sectional.
