South Adams baseball pitcher Grant Besser threw a one-run no-hitter in a 9-1 win at Northeastern on Saturday.
Besser walked two and struck out 21 in the seven innings. It is the most strikeouts in the state since 2005 and ranks fourth all-time in a single game.
Joe Stuber led the offense for the Starfires, going 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI. and Collin Shaffer went 1 for 3 with three RBI.
WAYNE 6-0, HERITAGE 2-6: At Heritage, Patriots' Andrew Frank struck out 12 with no walks in a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader. The Generals won the first game 6-2. Wayne scored four in the top of the second. Andrew Rhodes and Sam Young scored twice to lead the team.
SAC: At Brookwood, Bishop Dwenger took the team title with a 1-under 287. Luke Miller carded a 4-under 68, earning medalist honors as the Saints took four of the top five spots. Logan Ryan was second with 72, Corey Ryan third with 73 and Danny Kimes was fifth with 74. Bishop Luers was second with 326 and Northrop third at 347.
NORTHEAST EIGHT: At Cobblestone, DeKalb won the conference tournament by three strokes 324-327 over Columbia City, who had gone undefeated in regular season play. Leo was third with 332. Leo's Reid Zimmerman earned medalist honors with an even-par 72. Bellmont's Brevin Slusher was second (74) and DeKalb's Gabe Schenk third (76).
CARROLL 5, LEO 0: At Wildwood Racquet Club, the Chargers won their seventh straight sectional title as Lauren VanWyngarden and Mia Toscos improve to 22-0 this season at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Leo's Cassidy Boyce and Quinn Stanchin, and Sydney Jackson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles over Emili Runestad.
CONCORDIA 5, NEW HAVEN 0: At Concordia, the host Cadets won their second straight title. Lindsey Sgro defeated Erica Miller 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Jadyn Stevens and Brooklyn Smith won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles over Kaitlin Shuman and Cheyenne Hieber.
HUNTINGTON NORTH 3, NORWELL 2: At Norwell, the Vikings won their first sectional title since 2015 with wins from Tarah Zumbrun 6-0, 6-1 over Grace White at No. 3 singles and both doubles matches. Macy Wohlford and Jule Nogaj 6-4, 6-3 over Madison Oakes and Sadie Mann at No. 1 and Braxtyn Maroney and Leann Ringengerg 6-3, 6-4 over Abby Hoover and Ashlee Xayyachack at No. 2. Breann Barger won for the host Knights at No. 1 singles 7-5, 7-5 over Jessica Henline and Molly Burton won 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles over Kassidy Thompson.
CENTRAL NOBLE 3, WESTVIEW 2: At West Noble, the Cougars defended their sectional title after winning the program's first championship a year ago. Central Noble swept the singles matches. Erika Maneke defeated Lauryn Riegsecker 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1, Ellie Cole won 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 over Reghan Heffner at No. 2 and Maggie Kaiser won 6-1, 6-2 over Kelby Christner at No. 3.
