South Side pulled a huge upset in the 4A Huntington baseball sectional, defeating No. 4 Huntington North 4-2 behind 6 2/3 innings from senior pitcher Thomas Romero and a home run from catcher Josh Smith.
The Vikings (24-5) had won 21 of its last 22 games entering the matchup against South Side, but managed just two hits against Romero and reliever Lee Barrera, who got the final out.
The Archers (12-12) got most of their production from the bottom of the order. Nos. 7 and 8 hitters Dion Goodwell and Xzavier Rogers each had two hits and scored runs, while No. 9 batter Elias Perez drove in two. South Side moves on to face Homestead in Monday's sectional title game.
Homestead (18-8) beat North Side (1-25) 13-3 in the other semifinal in Huntington. Spartans pitcher Will Ferguson tossed a complete game and gave up just one hit, while first baseman Isaac Bair went 2 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored at Huntington.
Blackhawk Christian dispatched Elkhart Christian 10-0 as Collen Wood and Abe Hicks combined to throw a no-hitter for the Braves (10-15). Blackhawk scored four runs in the first and third innings at Fremont and will play the host Eagles for the sectional championship Monday.
Fremont reached the title game with an 8-2 victory over Bethany Christian (9-10). Senior Rhett Evans doubled, tripled, homered and drove in four runs for the Eagles (13-14), while also starting on the mound.
