Homestead boys carry 1st-quarter lead to win

VICTORIA JACOBSEN | The Journal Gazette

Bishop Dwenger was done in by a dreadful first quarter in Thursday's first SAC Holiday Tournament game, falling to Homestead 51-39.

The Saints shot 1 for 7 from the field in the first quarter of the quarterfinal game while Homestead's Luke Goode hit two 3-pointers and tipped in a rebound for another basket, and just like that the Spartans led 18-2 after one quarter.

Bishop Dwenger actually outscored Homestead over the next three quarters, occasionally narrowing the deficit to as few as nine points in the second half, but never quite dug itself out of the early hole.

Goode led all scorers with 22 points and his teammate Alec Grinsfelder scored six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. Zak Krueger added nine to the Spartans effort.

Bishop Dwenger's Jared Lee did not miss a shot in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points to finish the game with 14 (he was also the lone Saint to score in the first quarter). But the Spartans played a successful game of keep-away in the final two minutes of the game, preventing Bishop Dwenger from narrowing the gap further.

Homestead will play the winner of this evening's Carroll vs. Wayne matchup in the semifinals tomorrow at noon.
