The South Side girls started their SAC Holiday Tournament title defense in Thursday’s nightcap with a 68-50 win over Northrop at Wayne.
It was the Archers' second win over the Bruins in the last 13 days and sets them up against Concordia on Saturday morning in the semifinals.
The Archers exploited their experience advantage inside from the get go with Alaya Chapman, one of the returners from last year’s title team, scoring six first-quarter points. Northrop fought back behind sophomore Destiny Jackson and her seven points and four rebounds.
What was a six-point game with five minutes to play in the opening half ballooned to a 15-point South Side lead as the Archers pushed the ball down low to T’Laizha Morris, who was one of three Archers in double figures as they led 43-28 at halftime.
Northrop made strides with their full court pressure in the third quarter, but struggled to get its jump shots to fall in critical moments.
Olivia Smith led all scorers with 21 points for the Archers, followed by Morris’ 16 and Jaci Jones’ 12 points. Northrop was led by TiAuna White and Jackson’s 14 points each.
