Fort Wayne Housing Authority Receives National Recognition

The following statement was released on Thursday, April 23, 2015 from the Fort Wayne Housing Authority:

Fort Wayne, IN, April 23, 2015 – The Fort Wayne Housing Authority is honored to announce its most recent national recognitions. On April 16, 2015, at the NAHRO North Central Region Committee (NCRC) annual conference, the Fort Wayne Housing Authority was awarded the NCRC Housing Achievement Award for Affordable Housing Program of the Year on behalf of its efforts with The Courtyard, Fort Wayne’s premiere supportive housing development for young adults aging out of the foster care system and the only apartment community of its kind in the state of Indiana. Not only does it offer safe and affordable housing options to young adults who may have no other options available, but it offers supportive services to its residents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

These supportive services include, but are not limited to, health and wellness issues as well as career and job development. The complex offers state-of-the-art training areas, arts and crafts labs, a fitness center, a commercially-equipped training kitchen,
urban gardening areas, educational and employment training programs and much, much more.

As a housing authority, FWHA understands the importance of helping these young adults find suitable housing as quickly as possible. Many people spend years on waiting lists before being able to locate affordable housing. This innovative community targets this often neglected demographic and is there for them at a time when they need it the most. The role our agency
played was to screen the applicants to determine eligibility and provide the funding for the project based vouchers.

The Fort Wayne Housing Authority was fortunate to partner with Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth of America (SAFY), Biggs Property Management and the City of Fort Wayne in order to bring The Courtyard venture to fruition. Our continuing collaboration with the development team made this an innovative way for our organization to aid this often underserved demographic. We share this award with them.

In addition, Mr. George Guy, Deputy Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Housing Authority, was awarded the Emerging Leader Rising Star of the Year Award. This award recognizes an individual who has distinguished themselves as an Emerging Leader.
