Silent-film star to get area honor

Associated Press

An Indiana native who became one of Hollywood's top silent movie actors will be honored with a historical marker in his hometown.

The marker recently approved by the Indiana Historical Bureau will be installed next year for John Bowersox in Garrett.

Bowersox was born and raised in the DeKalb County city. He enjoyed a successful stage career before starring in more than 90 Hollywood movies under the stage name John Bowers.

His wife, Maurgerite de la Motte, was also a star, but they were separated when Bowersox died in 1936 following a career slump.

DeKalb County historian John Bry tells the (Auburn) Star that Bowersox's sad ending is believed to have been an inspiration for the main character in the original “A Star is Born” film.

Graham pregnant

Surprise! That's how model Ashley Graham announced she's pregnant with her first child. Graham and filmmaker Justin Ervin are also celebrating their ninth wedding anniversary.

The two shared a short video on Instagram showing off Graham's growing bump. She wished her husband happy anniversary and said their lives are “about to get even better.”

Ervin held a sonogram image on his Instagram account as he gave his 31-year-old wife a kiss on the cheek. He called Graham his “daily inspiration” and added: “I love you and I love us.”

Brown loses vote

Country musician Zac Brown has lost a bid to limit public access to his property in Alaska.

Brown had asked the Kenai Peninsula Borough Planning Commission to remove easements along his property in hills above Homer, a small city on Kachemak Bay on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, KSRM-AM reported Tuesday.

“I'm not interested in the public coming up to my home, people snooping, walking up to my windows,” Brown told the commission. “I've had to sell property for this reason.”

Brown's property is at the end of a secluded road. In addition to the lot where he built his house, Brown purchased other lots to “protect the privacy of his family,” according to the petition.

Homer resident John Fowler owns property near Brown and is heading an effort to build a trail along the easement. He and others involved in the project have sought to maintain the easements to retain public access.

The commission voted 5-4 against Brown's request Monday following more than two hours of public testimony.
