Cheesecakes coming to Wells Street

The Wells Street Corridor will get a colorful addition in early 2020 with a sweet new tenant.

The owners of Purple Mountain Cheesecake and Desserts have bought 1135 and 1137 N. Wells St. – the former Jack and Johnny's location. The building, which has been unused for some time, will undergo a complete remodel/restoration.

The work should begin this week with a cleanup, says Dan Ellenberger, who owns the bakery with his brother Aaron Ellenberger.

The historic space will give the bakery a chance to expand with a storefront and dine-in options.

The business will also be able to have more regular hours for the public.

The project also puts Purple Mountain Cheesecake near the growing riverfront, just blocks from Promenade Park.

“We were very much inspired by the riverfront project, the talk of Headwaters Junction, and all of the other new development downtown,” Dan Ellenberger says. “We are very excited about this location.”

The goal is to be open by early 2020, but the timeline will depend on contractors, construction and permitting.

Getting its start in 2007, Purple Mountain Cheesecake currently operates out of 424 E. Wayne St., taking wholesale and custom orders for cheesecakes. The expansive menu features traditional flavors, such as vanilla and lemon; deluxe creations such as Key lime, chocolate-covered banana and peanut butter cup; and premium options, such as brownies. The bakery also makes cakes and pies.

Fort Wayne diners should be familiar with the desserts, as Purple Mountain supplies local restaurants such as the Casa's restaurants, Henry's and JK O'Donnell's.

Chick-Fil-A reopening

The Chick-Fil-A restaurant at Jefferson Pointe will reopen at 6:30 a.m. June 24, according to a post Tuesday on its Facebook page.

Fort Wayne native Tony Gibson took over the franchise location March 1 and began a renovation project that has completely redesigned the interior including an expanded kitchen and remodeled play area. The parking lot has been reconfigured and the drive-thru was expanded to accommodate two lanes of traffic.

Gibson previously told The Journal Gazette that the remodeled location would have a similar setup to the new Glenbrook Square Chick-Fil-A.

Father's Day deal

On Sunday, there will be two opportunities to treat Dad at The Lucky Moose, 622 E. Dupont Road.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a brunch buffet will be available. Items include omelets made to order, scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, biscuits and gravy, French toast, pancakes, beer-battered fish, pulled pork, ribs, coconut shrimp and salad bar.

In the evening, from 4 to 8 p.m., a buffet with beer-battered fish, ribs, shrimp, pizza, pulled pork and salad bar might appeal to dads who don't want to barbecue.

Both buffets will have chocolate cake for dessert.

The brunch buffet will cost $13.13. The evening buffet will cost $11.77. Call 490-5765 for more information.

So Geek delayed

Sweets So Geek has encountered some roadblocks with its new retail store in Georgetown. But Chad Seewald and his team are still producing custom cakes.

The original location for the bakery and sweets shop closed in May ahead of a move to a larger location on East State Boulevard.

Construction delays have changed the opening date for the retail store from June 1 to possibly the end of this month. There is not an opening date for the new retail store.

Seewald shares, though, that they are still creating custom cakes at Cookspring Shared Kitchen on Rudisill Boulevard.

The Cookspring kitchens are home to many food trucks and up-and-coming food ventures in the city.

Triple B's closed

Triple B's BBQ, 6207 Plantation Lane, has closed the doors of its restaurant.

There is a bankruptcy filing for Brenda J. Schenk, doing business as Triple B's BBQ.

According to a Facebook post, Triple B's BBQ will continue to operate as a catering and food truck business.

The restaurant offered picnic-style barbecue, such as ribs, turkey tips and brisket.

4 new at Culver's

Culver's is celebrating summer with four new custard flavors of the day.

The first flavor debuted Monday, and the remaining three flavors will be released on the 10th of each of the following three months.

All of Culver's more than 700 restaurants will offer the new flavors on the day they are introduced and sprinkle in additional appearances outside of their release dates.

The lineup includes Creamy Lemon Crumble this month, Midnight Toffee on July 10, dulce de leche cheesecake on Aug. 10 and devil's food cake on Sept. 10.
