Coveted coffee shop coming to Waynedale

A new cafe is getting ready to set up shop in Waynedale.

Tazza Café is expected to open this fall at 5991 Bluffton Road. The cafe will be in the former Solly's Coins in the building adjacent to the Waynedale BMV branch.

Tazza will feature specialty coffees, espresso-based beverages and a selection of food items. Indoor seating will be available, as will a drive-through.

The shop is likely to be a welcome addition to the Waynedale community. A 2018 survey of the community showed a desire to add a coffee shop to the business district. More than 20% selected “coffee/pastry shop/ice cream” in response to what type of business they wanted to see in Waynedale. Other options included bookstores, clothing boutiques and gyms.

The community on the city's south side does not have a coffee shop, and businesses such as Waynedale Bakery and Azar's Big Boy have closed in recent years.

Orchard anniversary

Ambrosia Orchard, Cidery, & Meadery will celebrate its second anniversary Saturday.

The 12-acre property at 14025 U.S. 27 will offer plenty of space for guests to spread out during the party. Ambrosia will have 14 meads and ciders available. Under a beer tent, 2 Toms Brewing, Dot and Line Brewing and Hop River Brewing will be pouring beer from 3 to 7 p.m. The orchard will be open 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

There also will be live music from 3 to 7 p.m., and Laz's Cuban Cafe will be onsite from 4 to 8 p.m.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets. All ages are welcome, although the beer tent will be restricted to people 21 and older.

Olive Twist turns 10

The Olive Twist is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this month.

The celebration includes a limited-edition balsamic glaze, events with partner restaurants, special discounts and giveaways.

Lori Berndt and her husband, Terry, opened the first Olive Twist store in October 2010 in Covington Plaza, offering gourmet olive oils and aged balsamic vinegars. The business eventually expanded to include a store in Auburn.

In addition to olive oils and vinegars, the stores now carry a variety of other gourmet food products, unique culinary gift items and bulk teas.

Sales from a limited-edition 10-Year Anniversary Hand-Crafted Tiramisu Balsamic Glaze will benefit Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana in honor of Lori Berndt's sister, Pamela Hollinger, who died 10 years ago.

The Olive Twist also is partnering with area restaurants to offer free samples of foods made with the store's gourmet olive oils and/or aged balsamic vinegars. These samples will be available Friday and Saturday throughout October. Among the giveaways will be a grand prize worth over $1,000 in store merchandise.

Pretzel deal

Ben's Soft Pretzels is celebrating National Pretzel Month today with a promotion that will benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

Guests can receive a jumbo soft pretzel with a minimum $1 donation to the fund. Limit one pretzel per person.

All of the donations from today will go toward building new Intrepid Spirit centers for military personnel who suffer from traumatic brain injury or psychological health conditions. Ben's Soft Pretzels has raised more than $150,000 for the fund in the past six years.

Pretzel fans can also enjoy two limited fall flavors: pepperoni bites and cinnamon powdered sugar topping.

Summit Grill Kitchen and Cocktails, 6525 Covington Road, has announced its opening date. The restaurant, which is the former Flanagan's, will host a grand opening on Friday.

• This Halloween, children younger than 12 who visit Steak 'n Shake in costume will receive a free kid's shake.

McDonald's recently announced that its expanding breakfast options with a new McCafé Bakery lineup. Beginning Oct. 28, the menu will include apple fritters, blueberry muffins and cinnamon rolls.

Each new menu item will be available all day at participating restaurants nationwide.
