Fire guts south-side apartment building

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

Flames gutted an apartment building on the city's south side Friday.

One firefighter was injured and taken to a local hospital in stable condition, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said in a statement.

Fort Wayne firefighters were called around 1:15 p.m. to the Tamera Gardens Apartments building in the 6600 block of John Street, where flames were shooting from the roof of the building. Witnesses said the fire might have been caused by a lightning strike, but fire crews could not confirm that.

Adam O'Connor, a spokesman for the Fort Wayne Fire Department, said firefighters saw flames coming from the attic area of the building when they arrived.

It was not clear whether anyone was in the building when the fire started.

Witness Dan Murdock said he works for Keller Development, which constructed the building. He said it was made up of eight units.
