Fort Wayne zoo mourns recent deaths of two sea lions

Two sea lions at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo have died since late March, the facility announced.
Grits, a female sea lion that had been under veterinary care, died March 30. Her sister, Fishbone, died Wednesday while undergoing a medical procedure.
"We share this heartbreak with our animal care professionals who cared for these sea lions every day for the past 17 years," Executive Director Jim Anderson said in a statement posted to the zoo's Facebook page. "We thank them for their outstanding work."
Both sea lions were born June 14, 2001, at Sea World Orlando in Florida. The animals came to Fort Wayne in 2002.
Veterinary and zoo staff tried to save Fishbone with rescue medical measures including CPR, according to the statement. Grits died last month after being under veterinary care for 11 days but her "health continued to deteriorate and staff made the difficult decision to euthanize her," officials said.
