In a small space overlooking Columbia Street, Caleb Young signed the lease Wednesday on the first studio apartment to open on The Landing.
With polished concrete floors and large windows, Young's new apartment is an example of the mix of modern and historic that The Model Group, the developer of The Landing, has been trying to capture. The $32.6 million development includes 70 apartments and 56,000 square feet of commercial and retail space.
According to The Landing's website, rent for available apartments currently ranges from $800 to $1,300 a month.
Confirmed commercial and retail tenants include 3BG Supply, Utopian Coffee Bar, Utopian Coffee headquarters and roastery, a BBQ restaurant and brewery from Utopian and Cerulean and a restaurant from the Cunningham Restaurant Group.
Young was joined by Mayor Tom Henry for the event. It was the mayor's first time visiting a completed apartment on The Landing. It's exactly what the city was hoping for, he said.
“Obviously we've been working on this for quite some time and watched it develop, ... and now to get to the point where you can actually see somebody sign a lease, it's very, very exciting,” Henry said.
Young, associate conductor for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, said he is excited to be downtown.
“I've been looking forward to moving in here for over a year. I was here when we had this whole building gutted and when I saw this construction, I said, 'I have to be here.'”
