County posts 1,228 new cases, 4 deaths

LISA GREEN | The Journal Gazette

Local positive test results for COVID-19 hit a four-digit mark again this week with the Allen County Department of Health on Wednesday reporting 1,228 more cases and four new deaths.

The update followed Tuesday's report of 17 more deaths in the county and 914 additional cases. Confirmed COVID-19 cases have hit four digits multiple times in the past week, though some of the reporting reflects a lag from infections during the holiday season.

The health department said Wednesday the county has had 86,045 known COVID-19 cases, including 45,547 confirmed, and 992 deaths.

Most northeast Indiana counties, including Allen, are in the red category, representing the most intense spread of the coronavirus.

Updates Wednesday to the online dashboard for the state showed 15,091 new cases through midnight Tuesday, including some dating back to Nov. 17.

That raised the total since March 6, 2020, to 1,393,574 cases statewide.

The Indiana Department of Health dashboard also showed 125 new deaths through Tuesday, including some dating back to Sept. 30. The state has recorded 19,319 deaths since March 16, 2020.

Since Sept. 1, the state has recorded 29,118 cases of individuals being reinfected with the novel coronavirus, which has more than one variant. Most of the recent concern has been about the omicron variant, described as easily spreading, although its effects on some individuals are milder than other variants, including delta.
