Souder reveals pancreatic cancer inoperable, starting chemo

JIM CHAPMAN | The Journal Gazette

Former U.S. Rep. Mark Souder says he has inoperable pancreatic cancer and “unless changes happen, there is no cure.”

Souder, 71, updated his health status to friends on Facebook on Tuesday night. He first revealed he had cancer Jan. 15.

“The news overall was mostly not good, but there is some hope,” he wrote in his latest post. “Chemo will start soon.”

Souder represented northeast Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2010.

He underwent surgery this month, and a biopsy revealed a large cancerous mass on the left side of his pancreas, he said in an earlier Facebook post.

Souder and former television journalists Melissa Long and Heather Herron recently collaborated on a book titled, “Television in Fort Wayne 1953 to 2018.”

“We accept God's authority,” Souder wrote in his latest post about his health. “We continue to ask for the wisdom for the doctors. But God's Will be done.”
