A section of Hanna Street will soon feature signs honoring a local philanthropist.
The Fort Wayne Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved a request to designate a four-block portion of Hanna Street just south of downtown as the "Miss Virginia Memorial Parkway" after "Miss Virginia" Schrantz, the founder of the Miss Virginia Mission House at 1312 Hanna St.
The designation will span along Hanna Street between Lewis and Hayden Streets.
"She is our icon and I consider her our Mother Teresa," said Fort Wayne resident Debra Butler, who collected the necessary petition signatures to obtain the designation.
Schrantz, who died in 1998 at the age of 91, consistently opened her home to residents in need for many years, said City Councilman Geoff Paddock, D-5th, speaking before the board in favor of the request.
"Miss Virginia was someone who – as those of us who have been around a while remember – opened up her doors and her home for food for clothing for shelter to almost anyone who was in need," Paddock said.
