Shooting witness given 3-year term

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

A key witness in the Easter morning slaying of Javon Burnett was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison for his role in the crime.

Joshua Smiley, 21, drove Tyrion McNair, 25, to The Summit at Ridgewood Apartments, where McNair shot Burnett, 26, more than a dozen times. A jury last week convicted McNair of murder, and Smiley testified against him.

Smiley had been charged with murder in the case but pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal as part of a plea agreement. He was sentenced Wednesday in Allen Superior Court.

McNair is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 1.

Trial date set in shooting at Link's

A March trial date was scheduled Wednesday for a Fort Wayne man charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting two men in September at Link's Wonderland.

The three-day trial for Gabriel Hicks, 30, is scheduled to start March 19 in Allen Superior Court.

He is accused of shooting Frank and Mike Page Sept. 21 at the entertainment complex on East Creighton Avenue.
