A well-meaning volunteer won't face discipline for voting in place of a senior citizen who couldn't make it up the stairs at the Jennings Center.
The incident occurred during the Nov. 4. mid-term elections. Apparently, the elevator at the center wasn't working properly. So, a 75-year-old Fort Wayne woman gave her ID and voting preferences to a Jennings Center worker to cast her ballots.
The Allen County Election Board discussed the matter during a special meeting Monday. Director of Elections Beth Dlug said there is insufficient evidence to know just who helped the elderly woman.
Election Board officials became aware of the incident from another poll worker, Dlug said.
"I don't think it was any attempt to defraud," she said. "It was a case of good intentions, but very bad judgment."
Dlug said in all likelihood another polling site will replace the Jennings Center.
