The Journal Gazette

A man was pinned inside his car for 20 minutes this morning after crashing into the path of another car, Fort Wayne police said.

At 6:37 a.m., emergency crews were called to the intersection of Stellhorn Road and Woodway Drive on reports of a crash.

When officers arrived, they found two cars in the intersection, an unmarked IPFW police vehicle and a Dodge passenger car, city police said in a statement.

It took Fort Wayne firefighters 20 minutes to free the driver from the Dodge, it said, and the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The driver of the other car, an IPFW officer, was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

No passengers were in either car, the statement said.

Police said their preliminary investigation found the driver of the Dodge was going south on Woodway Drive when he pulled into the path of the unmarked IPFW police vehicle, which was traveling west on Stellhorn Road.

While officers investigated the scene, Stellhorn was shut down for about two hours, the statement said. One lane in each direction subsequently opened.

The crash remains under investigation
