One dead, two injured in beauty college shooting

Journal Gazette

One man is dead and two women injured, one critically, after a shooting early Monday night at the Ravenscroft Beauty College on Fort Wayne's northeast side.

About 6:45 p.m. officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency responders surrounded the beauty school at the intersection of Lahmeyer and Stellhorn roads for a reported shooting. Officers found a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, said John Chambers, public information officer for the Fort Wayne Police Department.

One of the women was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, but was later downgraded to critical. The second victim arrived at a local hospital separately in good condition.

When officers entered the building, they found a man dead, Chambers said. That man is believed to be the shooter, who killed himself.

Chambers said he did not know how many people were in the building at the time of the incident but that multiple people were at the scene when the shooting occurred.

The agencies at the scene included the FWPD, Allen County Sheriff's Department, Fort Wayne Fire Department, Homeland Security and the Three Rivers Ambulance Authority. Officers from the Indiana State Police, FBI and U.S. Marshals Service were also spotted. Chambers described the scene as an "all hands on deck" situation.

"The information that we received was that it was possibly an active shooter that was inside the building at the time of dispatch," Chambers said. "So, as officers arrived on scene we set up a perimeter and secured the premises at which time we had teams of officers enter into the building and search for the suspect and any more victims."

Ravenscroft, 4530 Lahmeyer Road, reported an enrollment of 164 students in fall 2015, according to the latest figure available from the National Center for Education Statistics.

The school, offering classes in cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, manicuring and teacher training, opened Monday at 4 p.m., according to hours listed on its website. Planned closing was 9 p.m.

Ravenscroft has been at the corner of Stellhorn and Lahmeyer roads since 2012. The building formerly housed the Anchor Room Christian bookstore.

The shooting investigation is ongoing. The Allen County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the man, along with the manner and cause of death.
