Coroner IDs 28th homicide victim

Found shot outside Legion early Sunday

DAVE GONG | The Journal Gazette

Michael Ternell Carter, 40, is Allen County's 28th homicide victim this year, according to the Allen County coroner's office.

Carter was found by emergency responders in the American Legion parking lot in the 700 block of East Lewis Street shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers found a large crowd gathered in the building's parking lot, which police say made it difficult to secure the scene and collect evidence.

In a news release Monday, the coroner's office said Carter died from a gunshot wound or wounds.

Witnesses at the scene told police there was an altercation inside the American Legion between several people followed by multiple gunshots from the parking lot.

Carter and another man were found in the parking lot, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The men were taken to a hospital where Carter was pronounced dead. The other victim was listed in critical condition Sunday. A third victim in critical condition was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Witnesses told The Journal Gazette that Carter had tried to defuse the situation before he was shot.

A separate incident in the 800 block of Hamilton Avenue on Sunday afternoon left another man in critical condition.
