Suspect in US 30 death back

Now in local jail 2 weeks after his arrest in Florida

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

Brandon Cook, the man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the road rage death of Orlando Fernandez on Aug. 6, was returned Thursday to Allen County, where he was incarcerated at the Allen County Jail.

According to court records, the two men were driving east on U.S. 30 about 5:30 p.m. when both pulled over to the side of the road. Cook got out of his pickup and after confronting Fernandez, punched the 60-year-old a few times in the face, leaving him bloodied. Cook, 27, took off with a passenger, who later identified him.

Fernandez told medics he was having chest pains and was taken to a hospital, where he died from a heart attack spurred by the incident.

Cook was arrested Aug. 16 in Panama City Beach, Florida, after U.S. marshals told police he might be there. Cook was living in a tent at a campground.

He has a hearing Tuesday.
