Mom accused of violating no-contact order

MATTHEW LEBLANC | The Journal Gazette

Amber Garrett violated a no-contact order before she was arrested last week, according to documents filed in Allen Superior Court.

Garrett, 27, is charged with two counts of neglect in the death of her son, 2-year-old Malakai Garrett, in 2017. She had been free on bond but was arrested Friday for allegedly violating the conditions of her release.

Court documents indicate she violated a no-contact order signed last year but offer few other details.

Malakai was beaten to death, according to doctors who examined the toddler. Jurors last month convicted Mitchell Vanryn, at one time Garrett's boyfriend, of aggravated battery and domestic battery but acquitted him of murder.

An initial hearing on Garrett's alleged violation of the conditions of her release is scheduled Tuesday. A five-day trial is scheduled to start June 24.

Vanryn is scheduled to be sentenced May 3.
