Man slain outside barbershop

Police probe Lake Avenue shooting

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A man was shot to death outside a business in the 1700 block of Lake Avenue about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Witnesses told police they heard multiple gunshots and saw the man being shot. Witnesses also saw several people running from the scene, said Mark Bieker, Fort Wayne police spokesman.

The victim was lying on a sidewalk in front of the Legendary Barbershop just west of North Anthony Boulevard. Police had to restrain a woman who ran toward the victim from a gas station across the street.

Investigators used yellow markers to identify numerous shell casings on the sidewalk near the man.

Bieker said police were working with nearby businesses and neighbors who have surveillance cameras to gather video evidence.

Bieker said it was unclear whether the shooter ran from the scene or fled in a vehicle. Police were talking to neighbors who might have seen a getaway car, he said.

“We get different colors (of the car), we get small, we get two-door, four-door, so what we're trying to do is to see if we can get a little bit better idea on surveillance video,” Bieker said.

When he heard the report on the police radio, Bieker said he was surprised there was a shooting at that location.

“This is something we haven't seen right around this area for quite a while,” he said.

The Allen County coroner will identify the victim. If the shooting is declared a homicide, it would be the sixth this year in the county.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 436-7867.
