Caught after chase; man, 34, also faces drug, gun charges

Fort Wayne police arrested a man in the May 15 shooting on Sherman Boulevard that badly injured another man, officials said Wednesday.

Bryant Aron, 34, was arrested Saturday on outstanding warrants but was charged with aggravated battery Tuesday in the shooting case.

Aron is the suspect in the shooting of Thomas Atkins, who was shot multiple times before he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

On Saturday, Aron allegedly led a Fort Wayne police officer on a pursuit after failing to make a complete stop at Harris Street and Coliseum Boulevard.

“(Aron) continued driving northbound at a high rate of speed and pulled into the lot of Brigadoon Fitness where he went westbound in the lot,” the officer said in court documents. “(Aron) then drove across a grassy area where I saw the vehicle go airborne and then the vehicle disappeared down in a ditch. I then saw the vehicle come out the other side of the ditch airborne while debris was flying all over.”

Aron's vehicle came to a stop shortly after and Aron left the vehicle and ran, dropping two black items to the ground in the process, court records said. Aron surrendered after he ran into a fenced-off area. When officers searched him, they found a loaded 9 mm Ruger magazine in his pocket. Officers located the corresponding firearm in the back of Aron's vehicle on top of a bag of clothes, documents said.

When Aron arrived at the Allen County Jail, corrections officers allegedly found a small plastic bag containing a white powdery rock-like substance in one of Aron's pockets. According to court documents, the substance tested positive for methamphetamine.

In addition to the aggravated battery charge, Aron is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon; operation of a motor vehicle after forfeiture of license for life; possession of cocaine; possession of a narcotic drug; possession of methamphetamine; felon carrying a handgun when the defendant has a prior felony conviction within the last 15 years; and resisting law enforcement.

According to court records, Aron was convicted of felony domestic battery in March 2017.
