A Fort Wayne police officer met an unexpected tenant Monday afternoon while investigating an abandoned apartment taken over by squatters on the city's southwest side – an alligator in a closet, police said.
“It was a baby, for sure,” police department spokeswoman Sofia Rosales-Scatena said Tuesday.
The reptile was taken from the 5700 block of Meadows Drive and placed into the custody of Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control, Rosales-Scatena said.
“#Tense moments until animal control arrived to take the creature away,” the police department posted Tuesday on Facebook. “We are thankful for the #Bravery of our men and women and for animal control for handling the beast.”
Wabash County crash kills driver
A North Manchester woman died in a crash Monday afternoon in Wabash County, Indiana State Police said Tuesday.
Peggy Boggs, 82, was driving north on Wabash Street when she failed to stop at a stop sign. She then pulled out onto U.S. 24, the state police post in Peru said in a statement.
Boggs' Ford Fusion was struck on the driver's side by an eastbound Ford Ranger driven by Stephen Conner, 72, of Urbana.
Boggs was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe she may have had a medical episode before the crash.
Conner was not injured.
Police did not believe alcohol or narcotics contributed to the crash.
