One person is dead after a fiery crash Sunday in Steuben County.
It was not immediately known whether alcohol contributed to the one-vehicle collision, which happened when a Ford SUV traveling south on Indiana 327 north of U.S. 20 left the road and hit a large tree head-on about 3:30 p.m., the Steuben County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by the time deputies arrived, the release said, adding the crash ignited the fire.
The deceased occupant – apparently the driver – was removed from the car once the blaze was fully extinguished, the release said.
The person's identity was being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin by the county coroner's office.
The weather was clear, and the road was dry at the time of the crash, which remained under investigation Sunday night, the release said. It noted the SUV was traveling "at a high rate of speed."
