Arrest made in slaying on Runnion

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A man was arrested Wednesday in the Oct. 13 shooting death of Pablo Vasquez on Runnion Avenue, but details about the crime still are unclear.

Jermaine Turner, 40, was arrested Wednesday at his place of employment without incident, police said. He was charged with murder, possession of a handgun by a serious violent felon and possession of a controlled substance.

“Through cooperation from witnesses and video from nearby businesses, we learned where he was working today and went and picked him up,” Detective Sgt. Tim Hughes, head of the Fort Wayne Police Department's robbery and homicide department, said Wednesday.

A release from the Fort Wayne Police Department said Fort Wayne homicide detectives and Gang Unit officers arrested Turner. Court documents were not available Wednesday.

Fort Wayne officers were called to the 600 block of Runnion Avenue about 6 p.m. on a report of gunshots. They found Vasquez lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vasquez was Allen County's 22nd homicide victim out of a total of 23 homicides this year. It is the second homicide arrest in as many days. On Tuesday, Michael O. Anderson Jr., 22, of Fort Wayne was charged with the shooting death of Jaylin Robinson, 23, on Sept. 28.

Robinson was found face down in the parking lot behind The Broadway Grill at 1420 Broadway around midnight.

In a video, Anderson is seen approaching Robinson, extending his arms as if to shake hands and shooting Robinson. He continued to shoot Robinson as he walked backwards before he turned to sprint away, a probable cause affidavit alleges.

Robinson's homicide was the 20th in Allen County this year.
