City man dies from injuries in house fire

JAMIE DUFFY | The Journal Gazette

A fire this week took the life of a 38-year-old Fort Wayne man.

Bernard Dunbar was rescued from a fire Tuesday afternoon at 4146 Plaza Drive. Firefighters found him unconscious in the home around 3 p.m.

Dunbar died later at the hospital of smoke inhalation and thermal burns, the Allen County coroner's office said. The death was ruled an accident, according to a news release.

The small home at the corner of Plaza and McKinnie Avenue was engulfed by the rapidly growing fire, investigators said. With fire raging throughout the house, firefighters forced their way through the front door to encounter a wall of fire, firefighters said.

They had to push back flames in order to pull Dunbar to safety, according to a news release from the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

No other victims were found.

The fire remains under investigation.
