Gunfire injures two Sunday evening

The Journal Gazette

Two reported shootings about 10 minutes apart kept police busy Sunday evening.

Initial reports of a shooting came in about 7:48 p.m. in the 300 block of East Pettit Avenue, near the Burger King and Kroger gas station in Southgate Plaza. A second shooting was called in the 700 block of Dolphin Drive as police were responding to the first scene.

A male and female victim were taken to the hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Paul Meitz, public information officer. The female was in critical condition and the male was in serious but stable condition.

Three vehicles were involved in an accident but police were still unsure of the circumstances surrounding it. Shell casings were found near the scene of the accident. Police couldn't immediately say whether the two scenes were connected, nor where the victims were shot. Meitz said it was "definitely not a straightforward scene."

Onlookers stood in the rain as police worked the scene on Pettit Avenue near Southgate Plaza.

Yellow police tape cordoned off much of the adjacent Burger King parking lot along with the road. Police walked the area, including the Kroger gas station, seeking witnesses.
